We all are confronted with difficult periods in our lives, particularly now as we are all discovering the many side effects of a global pandemic on our lives.  Whether it be loss, conflict, anxiety, depression, or relationship problems, these issues can interfere with our ability to achieve our life goals.  Seeking therapy can feel overwhelming and you may feel vulnerable or in the midst of a crisis.  Finding the right person for you to work with is of paramount importance and we hope to help you find that person, whether it is Annie Rosenthal, LCSW, or another professional.  Working with a licensed clinical social work professional can provide the support and guidance needed to address challenges in a safe, nurturing environment.

Shifting Gears Psychotherapy is committed to the journey of being actively anti-racist in our work.   You will notice the magazines in our waiting room reflect black and brown faces, as does some of the art on our walls.  Annie Rosenthal, LCSW is committed to creating a culturally sensitive therapeutic environment, honoring the varying backgrounds and diversity of our clients.  

We blend a variety of clinical frameworks including CBT, DBT, and ACT.  We firmly  embrace the principles of mindfulness and meditation and are a trauma-informed practice that understands intergenerational racial trauma  as part of the world we live in.  

Our goal is to provide clients with tools that have been proven to  literally shift the gears in our brains.  Learning how to "train your brain" can help us move from reactive to calm.  It is a vehicle for looking at emotions and noticing them, without being hijacked.  We recognize that this is a practice, not a perfect, as we strive towards mindfulness and greater control in our lives. 

We view the role of the therapist as facilitator of the process of self-exploration within a trusting relationship.   This approach allows the client to be in the driver's seat, choosing the direction on the map we create collaboratively. Ultimately, the goal is to help people gain enhanced personal growth and to navigate challenges that the universe has presented.
